How to Sell on Shopee Indonesia for Beginners

Set up your Shopee Indonesia store from scratch. Account registration, product listings, shipping setup, and first order — no business license required.

Shopee Indonesia setup takes under 20 minutes. Getting it right — store profile, listings, shipping settings, first sale — takes knowing the steps before you start.

This guide covers everything from registration to fulfilled order, in sequence, with screenshots.

What Is Shopee Indonesia and Why Do Beginners Start There?

Shopee Indonesia (shopee.co.id) is the country’s largest ecommerce marketplace, with tens of millions of active buyers transacting each month. Beginners start on Shopee because there are no upfront listing fees, the Seller Centre runs on mobile and desktop, and integrated courier logistics remove the need to negotiate with shipping companies directly.

Indonesia runs on marketplaces. According to the Google, Temasek, and Bain e-Conomy SEA 2024 report, over 80% of Indonesian online transactions happen on marketplace platforms. Shopee holds the dominant position.

For a new seller, built-in buyer demand is the key advantage. You do not need to drive your own traffic. Buyers are already searching — your job is to show up correctly.

Shopee Indonesia prices everything in IDR (Rp). Commission fees range from 1.6% to 6.5% per completed transaction, per Shopee Indonesia’s seller fee schedule. No listing fees — you pay only when you make a sale.

Shopee Indonesia Fee Structure

Before you price your first product, understand what Shopee deducts from each sale.

Fee TypeRateNotes
Commission fee1.6% – 6.5%Varies by category; fashion and electronics typically 3% – 5%
Service fee~Rp 1,000 – Rp 2,000 per orderApplied on every completed transaction
Transaction fee0% – 2%Applies on certain payment methods
Listing feeRp 0No charge to create or maintain product listings

Build these deductions into your pricing before you list. Selling at your cost price with a 4% commission coming out of it is a loss, not a sale.

Step 1: Register Your Shopee Indonesia Seller Account

Register at shopee.co.id or via the Shopee app using a valid Indonesian phone number, verify with an OTP, then activate your seller account under My Shop. Registration requires only a KTP and a phone number — no business license, no upfront fees. The process takes under 10 minutes.

Follow these steps exactly:

  1. Download the Shopee app (Android or iOS) or open shopee.co.id on a desktop browser.
  2. Tap Register and enter your active Indonesian phone number (with +62 country code).
  3. Enter the OTP sent to your phone to verify your number.
  4. Set a password and fill in your basic buyer profile.
  5. Tap your profile icon → My ShopStart Selling.
  6. Enter your store name. This is permanent after confirmation — choose something that matches your product category and is easy for buyers to remember.
  7. Select your main product category.
  8. Complete KTP verification: upload a clear photo of your Kartu Tanda Penduduk. Shopee uses this for identity verification only — it does not affect your listing capabilities.

Requirements:

  • Valid Indonesian KTP
  • Active Indonesian phone number for OTP verification
  • Bank account at a supported Indonesian bank (BCA, BRI, Mandiri, BNI accepted per Shopee Indonesia payout documentation)

If annual revenue exceeds Rp 500 million, Indonesian tax law requires PKP registration — far above where new sellers start.

Step 2: Complete Your Shopee Store Profile

A complete store profile — logo, banner, description, return policy, and pickup address — builds buyer trust before they read a single listing. Shopee rewards complete profiles with better search visibility. Takes 15 minutes.

Go to Seller CentreMy ShopShop Profile.

Fill in each section:

  • Shop logo: Square image, minimum 300×300px. A clean product photo or simple logo works. Avoid text-heavy images — they compress poorly at thumbnail sizes.
  • Shop banner: 1200×400px. Show your main product range or a current promotion.
  • Shop description: 2–3 sentences — what you sell and why buyers should follow your store. Keep it factual.
  • Return and cancellation policy: A transparent policy reduces disputes on higher-priced items.

Set your pickup address: Go to Shop Settings → Shipping Settings and enter where couriers collect packages. Shopee’s logistics partners include J&T Express, JNE, SiCepat, and Ninja Xpress, per Shopee Indonesia Supported Logistics documentation. Enable the couriers in your area.

Step 3: Upload Your First Product Listing

Create a listing via Seller Centre → My Products → Add New Product. Fill in product name, category, description, a minimum of 3 photos, IDR price, stock quantity, and shipping weight. Listings with 5+ photos and detailed descriptions rank higher in Shopee search results than sparse listings at the same price.

Go to Seller CentreMy Products+ Add New Product.

Work through each field:

  1. Product name: Include the specific search terms buyers use. “Kaos Polos Unisex Cotton Combed 30s Hitam” outranks “Kaos Polos” in Shopee search. Titles cap at 100 characters.
  2. Category: Select the most specific sub-category. It determines your commission rate tier and which promotions you qualify for.
  3. Product photos: Minimum 3. Lead with a clean white-background image, lifestyle shots for the rest. Shopee recommends 9 total.
  4. Product description: Minimum 100 characters; aim for 500+. Include materials, dimensions, colors, care instructions. Use line breaks — dense paragraphs lose mobile readers.
  5. Price in IDR: Check competitor listings before setting yours. Shopee displays a price competitiveness indicator once your listing is live.
  6. Stock quantity: Enter your real inventory count. Shopee penalizes sellers who fail to fulfill due to stock-outs.
  7. Shipping weight: Weight in grams including packaging. Under-declared weight triggers courier disputes.
  8. Variations: For multiple colors or sizes, add variations with individual prices and stock counts under the Variations tab.

Not sure what price to set after Shopee’s fees? Use the Marketplace Seller Tools to calculate your actual margin before you publish. Free. No account needed.

Step 4: Configure Your Shipping Settings

Go to Seller Centre → Shop Settings → Shipping Settings to enable courier services and set your order processing time (SLA). Enable at least 2 courier services to give buyers choice. Set your SLA to 2 business days or fewer — longer processing times suppress your listing rank in Shopee Indonesia search.

Shipping configuration, step by step:

  1. Enable couriers: Toggle on the logistics partners in your area. Shopee calculates shipping costs for buyers automatically — no direct courier negotiation needed.
  2. Set your SLA (processing time): The business days you commit to handing orders to the courier. Typically 1 or 2 days. Start at 2 days; move to 1 once you have a reliable daily routine.
  3. Shopee Supported Logistics (SSL): SSL lets Shopee handle courier booking, label generation, and tracking inside Seller Centre. The right default for beginners.
  4. Pickup vs. drop-off: Pickup is convenient for volume. Drop-off works if you are near a J&T, JNE, or SiCepat branch and want more timing control.

Shopee’s Free Shipping campaigns:

Shopee periodically subsidizes buyer shipping costs platform-wide. You can opt in (accepting a small payout reduction) or opt out. Most new sellers opt in — the “Free Shipping” badge in search results increases click-through rate meaningfully.

Step 5: Set Up Your First Promotion

Shopee Marketing Centre (Seller Centre → Marketing Centre → Vouchers) lets you create follower vouchers, bundle deals, and free shipping incentives without a minimum ad spend. New sellers should activate a follower voucher and a free shipping voucher before their first listing goes live — both improve search ranking and conversion without requiring an advertising budget.

Three promotions worth setting up immediately:

  1. Follower voucher: Offer 5%–10% off for buyers who follow your shop before purchasing. This grows your follower count, which increases your content reach in Shopee’s social feeds and notification system.

  2. Free shipping voucher: Set a minimum order amount (e.g., Rp 50,000) and a maximum shipping subsidy you are willing to cover (e.g., Rp 15,000). Even a partial shipping subsidy is enough to display a “Free Shipping” label on your listing in search.

  3. Bundle deals: If you sell complementary products, offer 5%–15% off when buyers purchase a defined combination. Bundle deals display a “Bundle Deal” badge on listing thumbnails, which increases click-through rate versus comparable listings at the same price.

On Shopee Ads for new sellers:

Shopee Ads are available from Seller Centre → Marketing Centre → Shopee Ads. Minimum keyword bid is approximately Rp 2,500 per click, per Shopee Indonesia Ads documentation. Do not start ads before your first 5 reviews. A zero-review listing rarely converts paid clicks. Build organic ranking and fulfillment quality first.

Step 6: Process and Fulfill Your First Order

When a buyer places an order, Seller Centre notifies you via app push notification and SMS. Pack the item, print the shipping label from Seller Centre → My Orders → To Ship, and hand it to the courier before your SLA deadline. Shopee releases payment 2–3 business days after the buyer confirms receipt, or automatically after a 7–10 day auto-confirmation window.

Order fulfillment, step by step:

  1. Check notifications: Open Seller Centre → My Orders → To Ship immediately after the notification. SLA countdown starts from the order timestamp.
  2. Print shipping label: Order detail page → Arrange ShipmentPrint Label. Attach to the package.
  3. Pack the item: Use packaging that protects the product in transit. Match your declared weight — underpacked shipments create courier disputes.
  4. Arrange pickup or drop-off: For SSL couriers, request pickup through Seller Centre → Shipping → Schedule Pickup. For drop-off, bring labeled packages to a J&T, JNE, SiCepat, or Ninja Xpress branch.
  5. Track the shipment: Seller Centre tracks automatically once the courier scans. Proactive chat updates on delays reduce negative reviews.
  6. Receive payment: After the buyer confirms receipt (or auto-confirm window closes), Shopee releases the payout to your Seller Balance. Withdraw via Seller Centre → My Income → Withdraw.

Payout timing reference (per Shopee Indonesia Help Centre):

ScenarioPayment Release Timing
Buyer confirms receipt manually2–3 business days after confirmation
Auto-confirmation (buyer does not confirm)7–10 days after delivery scan
Disputed order resolved in seller’s favorFunds released after dispute closes

Keep your payout bank account updated in Seller Centre → My Income → Payout Account. Outdated bank details are the most common reason for delayed withdrawals among new sellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to start selling on Shopee Indonesia?

You can have a registered seller account and your first product listing live within one hour. Registration requires only a KTP and an active phone number. Most new sellers complete their account, store profile, and first five listings within a half-day. There is no review period before your listings appear in Shopee search.

What fees does Shopee Indonesia charge new sellers?

Shopee charges a commission of 1.6% to 6.5% per completed transaction based on product category, plus a per-order service fee of approximately Rp 1,000–2,000, per Shopee Indonesia’s official seller fee schedule. There are no listing fees, no monthly fees, and no upfront registration costs. You pay only when you make a sale.

Do I need a business license to sell on Shopee Indonesia?

No. Individual sellers register using a personal KTP and phone number. Shopee Indonesia does not require a SIUP (Surat Izin Usaha Perdagangan) or NIB (Nomor Induk Berusaha) to open a store. If your annual revenue exceeds Rp 500 million, Indonesian tax law requires PKP status registration — a threshold most new sellers reach only after sustained growth, not in their first year.

Why is my new Shopee Indonesia listing not appearing in search results?

New stores with no order history and no buyer reviews rank lower in Shopee search by default. The three fastest ways to improve organic ranking: complete all listing fields and upload 5+ product photos, set your order processing SLA to 2 days or fewer, and fulfill your first orders without cancellations or late shipments. Do not run Shopee Ads before you have at least 5 completed orders with positive reviews — paid placement on an unproven listing rarely converts.
